
Trinitite is the glassy residue left on the desert floor after the plutonium-based Trinity nuclear bomb test on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The glass is primarily made of arkosic sand composed of quartz grains and feldspar with small amount of calcite, hornblende, and augite in a matrix of sandy clay.
Our Trinitite is from the original collection of Dr. Ralph Emerson Pray, a geologist who legally collected large quantities of Trinitite during the later 1940s and early 1950s, before the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission bulldozed and buried the site in 1953. Portions of his private collection later entered the legal scientific and mineral collector market, serving as a trusted and verified source for authentic Trinitite.
Trinitite emits very low levels of radiation which may be only slightly above background. While safe to own and handle, Trinitite contains fission products such as Cs-137 and should not be ingested or inhaled.
The authenticity of our Trinitite has been confirmed based on a 3 hour shielded scintillometer measurement of representative 28 g sample. Every Trinitite sample is accompanied by a Guarantee of Authenticity showing the characteristic Am-241, Eu-152 and Cs-137 spectral peaks.
